Front and Rear Sight and Base

The front sight is made in our shop, in these pictures it is still very tall, but that will allow for sighting later. It is machined from flat stock and soldered into a slot machined into the barrel.

The rear sight is a Flat Buckhorn, the sight base is machined from flat stock to match the barrel flats and then soldered in place.

Forearm Entry Pipe and Ramrod

With the Pipes soldered to the underrib, I can drill the ramrod hole through the forearm and inlet for the entry pipe.

Attaching Pipes to the Underrib.

I inlet for the ramrod pipe, and soldered them in place today. Pretty basic process, just careful inletting and then soldered the same way as the underrib is attached to the barrel.

Forearm and Wedge key.

I attached a ebony forearm tip a few days ago, and today I inlet the forearm and installed a temporary key.

The underrib starts out as a piece of flat stock that gets milled and shaped to match the radius, transitions and taper of the barrel, and then gets milled to accept the ramrod. The whole thing is then soldered onto the barrel.

There is a lot of grinding, filing and sanding to get a seamless fit between the barrel and the rib, but it is necessary or the solder will show through after it is blued.


Photobucket All of the excess solder will have to be cleaned up using brass chisels,dental picks and then stoned off.

I had a little spare time today while I was waiting on some parts to rust, so I managed to get the ramrod pipe w/ swivel cleaned up. I also made the oval inlays for the wedge key. These were pretty simple, just draw out an oval, than double stack a couple pieces of 1/8" flat stock in the mill and drill/mill the right places. Then just a little time on the belt sander to make them oval. I'll still have to countersink for the screw heads but that's just a couple minutes with a hand drill after they are inlet into the wood.

Ramrod Pipes and Swivels.

Because this is a big bore rifle it will need a larger ramrod, the largest ramrod pipe that are commercially available is 7/16". This will get a 1/2" ramrod so the pipes have to be made instead of bought.

Ramrod Pipes are mostly a lathe turning operation. The plain pipe is bored to 1/2" I.D. then turned down slightly on the outside and a highlight groove is machined in an even spacing form both ends. The sling swivel pipe is turned to match the plain pipe and then a button swivel is turned and then fitted and silver soldered on. In the pictures below the silver solder still needs to be cleaned off and polished.


The Forearm Entry Pipe is turned on the lathe from larger diameter round stock, allowing me to turn the rise in one piece. The 1/2" I.D. is bored through it, then a 3/4" counter bore is cut in about half way or more depending on the look you are going for. Then the same highlight is turned into the entry to match the other pipes, at the larger diameter a couple of wedding band cuts are turned in to match the wedding band transition on the barrel. Once everything is turned then the excess area in the larger diameter is cut off with a hacksaw and the edges are filed.

Then I turned and threaded the rear swivel to match the profile of the swivel on the ramrod pipe. Then both of the swivels were drilled to accept a standard sling swivel.

And this makes up the ramrod and swivel parts.

For those who don't know how big an 8 bore is these next pictures should give you a frame of reference.

This is a barrel blank, so the first step is to machine it to the desired shape and then turn down the taper.

I turned a wedding band transition between the octagon and the round section.

Then I fit the barrel to the action.

The next step is to machine the excess metal off the action so that all the flats match. On the side I leave the shoulders to fit to the wood later.

Then I cut the original trigger guard off and replaced it with one that is more fitting the style of the rifle.

This is a speculation gun at the moment, this rifle is not for a specific customer at the moment. So feel free to contact us if you are interest in this rifle.

I'll start with the specs:
8 Bore barrel - .825" land, .840" grove, 1:104 twist 32" long.
With this slow a twist it's patched round ball, the mould isn't here yet but should be any day now. Jeff Tanner is making the .805" mould. This should cast a 786 grain pure lead ball.

The action is a Pete Allen casting, I think it is the largest he makes, but could be wrong. It slightly resembles the Wesson caplock actions from the 1870's in my opinion.

This is the initial paper design, the finished rifle should look pretty close to this when I'm finished, of course none of the engraving or checkering is represented on the drawings.
